12 Injured, Lodge Damaged In Boyne Highlands Fire

A dozen guests were injured and the main lodge hotel at Boyne Highlands Resort was significantly damaged during a structure fire on the popular northern Michigan property early Sunday morning.

A cause has not yet been established for the fire, which broke out shortly after 1:30am Sunday morning. An estimated 40 percent of the lodge sustained fire damage, with a majority of the remaining structure impacted by some combination of fire, smoke and water. An estimated 113 guests were staying in the main lodge across 64 rooms at the time of the fire, according to the resort. A dozen of those guests sustained injuries, with one guest transported outside of northern Michigan for treatment. 

Firefighters were still battling hot spots in the building as of 1pm Sunday afternoon. The resort closed Sunday; a reopening date has yet not been established.

"Our primary concern right now is for those impacted by the fire, and for their health and wellbeing," says Boyne Highlands Resort President/General Manager Mike Chumbler. "We're extremely grateful to the fire, EMS, and law enforcement agencies who are managing the situation."
