Free Radio Check for Local Boaters

Starting now, boaters from Grand Traverse Bay to the Manitou Passage can check that their vessel's VHF radio is working – free – simply by calling Channel 28. Inland Seas Educational Association has made the service available by linking up with Sea Tow Services International, Inc., the nation’s leading professional marine assistance provider. Using Sea Tow’s Automated Radio Check service helps out the U.S. Coast Guard because it reduces non-emergency communications on VHF Channel 16, freeing up the channel up for distress call activity. To use the service, simply tune your radio's VHF to Channel 28, key the mic, and request a radio check. You'll hear an automated response, and your call will be played back, confirming that your radio is operational and allowing you to assess transmission strength, a crucial safety check.
