Holiday Drinks on Tap
The holidays are a time when many enjoy cozying up with a festive cocktail, catching up with old friends at a local pub, or (for those prefer not to partake) trying out some unique NA options. This week's Northern Express, sister publication of The Ticker, puts a northern Michigan twist on the holiday beverage and bar scene.
Low Bar manager and mixologist Zach Cavender shares a firsthand look at all the great elements that go into making a delicious mixed drink - not just spirits, but bitters, herbs, syrups, and even smoke. “Bitters are the salt and pepper of the cocktail world,” Cavender says. “Because bitters can make or break a drink, you know? But they’re such a small element by volume.”
Looking for a new local spot to have a drink for the holidays? Check out Walloon Watershed, a new restaurant and bar that opened Walloon Lake in September. Husband-and-wife team Matt and Meghan Thatcher launched the new establishment - which mixes the upscale with the approachable in both its decor and food/drink menus - after noticing an unmet need in the village of Walloon Lake. Mobile bars are another trend on the rise in northern Michigan, with several companies - like Tonic & Lime, Wandering Spirits, and Roaming NoMi - offering unique bar experiences and special occasion pop-ups.
For those who prefer to go alcohol-free, the boozy holidays can be tricky to navigate. But never fear: Numerous businesses across northern Michigan are offering increasingly creative NA options, from zero-proof wine to alcohol-free beer to delicous nitro-charged cold brew coffees. All those and more are featured in this week's Northern Express, available to read online or for free on newsstands at more than 650 locations in 13 counties across northern Michigan.
