Pit Spitters Become Back-To-Back Northwoods League Champs

The Traverse City Pit Spitters won their second championship in as many full seasons Friday after defeating the St. Cloud Rox 9-3 on the road in the Northwoods League championship game.

The Pit Spitters made league history by becoming the first team to win back-to-back championships after clinching both the 2019 and 2021 titles. The 2020 season featured an abbreviated schedule with an intramural pod format instead of a normal full season with 22 Northwoods League teams, as was the case this year and in 2019.

The Pit Spitters rode to victory on the strength of a strong outing from pitcher Cam Schuelke, who only gave up one run on three hits over six innings, and from an active offense led by Mario Camilletti, who hit a two-run home run in the top of the eighth to give the Pit Spitters an 8-3 lead.

Shortly following their win, the Pit Spitters announced they would be selling a line of 2021 championship merchandise through their online store. "Thank you to all the fans for a great season," the organization wrote. "We couldn't have done it without everyone's support. We'll be back next year, with another title to defend!"
