Possible Human Bones Unearthed at Grandview Parkway Construction Site

Bones that could be human were discovered by construction workers at the Grandview Parkway construction site near Oak Street, with authorities enlisiting the help of forensic experts to try and determine the bones' origins.

At approximately 4:30pm Friday, workers unearthed a bone while working on Grandview Parkway. The workers "immediately halted operations and notified authorities," according to the Traverse City Police Department. "The site was secured to preserve any potential evidence and ensure a thorough investigation."

TCPD said an initial examination indicates the unearthed bones may be human, but "further analysis is required to confirm this and determine the bone origins." Forensic experts - including forensic anthropologists with Western Michigan University and the Michigan State Police - will help conduct a detailed examination of the bones, according to the TCPD.

"The investigation will seek to determine whether the bones are associated with original fill used for Grandview Parkway, an old burial site, or other historical contexts," the TCPD said. "At this time, we are not aware of any local missing person's reports. However, we are reviewing historical records."
