Boardman Avenue Closures Thursday-Friday

By Beth Milligan | Oct. 19, 2022

With city commissioners approving a pilot project this week to convert State Street, Pine Street, and Boardman Avenue from one-way to two-way traffic, work will begin immediately on the project. Boardman Avenue will be closed Thursday and Friday this week between State Street and Front Street to allow for traffic islands to be removed.

The project will also have the following road impacts this week (see construction map):

> Eastbound traffic on State Street will be maintained through the intersection
> Westbound traffic on State Street west of Wellington Street will be prohibited
> Westbound traffic on Front Street will be maintained through the intersection
> The east-west alley north of State Street will remain open to traffic

Once the traffic islands are removed, temporary barricades will be placed (and vehicular traffic will remain the same) until the full transition to two-way traffic is complete on November 11.

According to the Traverse City Downtown Development Authority, the goals of the pilot project are to slow traffic, create a more walkable environment for pedestrians, and provide better connections to the surrounding grid network. More information is available online here.
