Colorado Coach Hired To Lead TC West Football Program

By Beth Milligan | Feb. 15, 2023

James Wagner has been named the next head coach of the Titan football program at Traverse City West High School. According to a Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) release, Wagner is moving for the job to Traverse City from Colorado, where he led a Tigers football turnaround that included two of the best seasons in school history in 2021 and 2022 at Summit High School in Breckenridge.

TCAPS said in the release that Wagner is "well known for his positive relationships with players, football knowledge, and energy." Wagner was selected through a process that included input from current and former players and parents as well as coaches and community. Prior to Summit High School, Wagner coached with the staff at Fossil Ridge High School (Fort Collins, Colorado), and Gaylord High School (Gaylord, Michigan). He has a bachelor's degree from Central Michigan University and earned his teaching certification through Taylor University.

“West is excited to welcome Coach Wagner to the Titan family,” Athletic Director Jason Carmien said in a statement. “His energy and passion will benefit student athletes and the athletic program as a whole. We look forward to the next chapter of Titan football under his leadership.”

The 2023-24 school year marks the 27th football season for the Titans. Wagner is the fourth head coach in Titan history.
