Live WWII Artillery Shell Found in TC Home

June 21, 2016

Police were called to retrieve what appeared to be a World War II-era artillery shell from a Traverse City home this weekend.

A recently deceased elderly man’s daughter was cleaning his home on the 500 block of West Ninth Street Saturday afternoon when she found the 70mm explosive device.

The family called Traverse City police, who brought in an Army explosives expert from Camp Grayling. He determined it was in fact a live explosive, but also that it didn’t pose an immediate danger, Capt. Kevin Dunklow says.

The device was relocated safely to the home's garage. Members of the Michigan State Police bomb squad were expected to dispose of the shell Monday.
