More Than 3 Million Michigan Voters Cast Their Ballots Before Election Day

Election Day is finally here, and millions of Michiganders will be making their way to the polls today. Even before precincts opened their doors at 7am this morning, though, more than 3 million Michigan voters had already cast their ballots for the 2024 election.
According to the office of Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, over 3.2 million Michigan residents voted prior to Election Day this year, including 1.2 million who cast their ballots as part of the state’s first-ever early voting period. The other 2 million plus votes came in the form of mail-in/absentee ballots.
While many Michiganders will still vote today, 3.2 million represents a sizable portion of the state’s electorate. Per the Secretary of State, that number means “nearly 45 percent of active registered voters have already cast a ballot.” For reference, Michigan’s total turnout for the last presidential election in 2020 was roughly 5.6 million voters.
In terms of demographics, the biggest voter groups so far are women (55 percent of the vote, compared to 45 percent for men) and older adults (51.4 percent of the ballots received so far come from voters over the age of 60).
