Motorcyclist Arrested for Drunk Driving After Fleeing Authorities at 100+ MPH on Center Road

By Beth Milligan | Sept. 3, 2024

A 49-year-old Peninsula Township man was arrested over the holiday weekend on multiple charges after fleeing authorities on a motorcycle at speeds topping 100 miles per hour on Center Road.

At approximately 7:50pm Saturday a sergeant from the Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office was traveling north on Center Road on Old Mission Peninsula to investigate a call. While the sergeant was in traffic, an older Kawasaki Sport-style motorcycle approached his patrol Tahoe from behind at a high rate of speed. The motorcyclist then began passing the sergeant's vehicle and several other vehicles in a no-passing zone. The motorcyclist was passing with oncoming traffic present.

The sergeant attempted to stop the motorcycle. The driver disregarded the lights and siren and began to flee at a high rate of speed, traveling at over 100 miles per hour. The sergeant began to lose sight of the motorcycle as it entered Seven Hills Road. But as the sergeant approached Seven Hills Road and Bowers Harbor Road, he found the driver had crashed at the intersection and was trying to get back on the motorcycle.

The driver was taken into custody and lodged at the Grand Traverse County Jail. He faces charges of fleeing and eluding, operating while intoxicated, and failing to register the motorcycle.
