New Owners for Beach Haus Resort

May 28, 2014

For the third time, a member of the Wuerfel family has taken over operations of the Beach Haus Resort Hotel on Traverse City's East Bay. Josh Wuerfel, director of stadium operations for the Traverse City Beach Bums, tells The Ticker he and wife Tonya closed on the deal late last week.

"It is now operating as a Wuerfel property," confirms Wuerfel.

David Schwandt, owner of Manistee-based Harbour Hotel Brokers, a boutique firm specializing in hotel properties, managed the deal between the previous owner from southern Michigan and the Wuerfels.

The Beach Haus is actually where Wuerfel's parents, John and Leslye – owners of the Beach Bums – got their start in hospitality as one-time managers of the resort, according to Josh Wuerfel. From 1970 through 1998, John Wuerfel built and developed two other East Bay properties – The Grand Beach Resort Hotel and the Sugar Beach Resort Hotel – through Wuerfel Resorts.

The property offers 32 units and 200 feet of sandy frontage on East Bay.

Josh Wuerfel says there are no major plans for the resort, just "keeping it in tiptop shape," he says. "We're very excited to be there and at this point looking forward to a wonderful summer season."
