Northern Michigan Has Two Of The Best ‘Wine Country Hotel’ Experiences In America

By Craig Manning | Aug. 7, 2024

Napa Valley might be “wine country,” but northern Michigan has the superior “wine country hotel” experiences. At least, that’s the takeaway from a recent USA Today 10Best readers choice poll, which put two northern Michigan wineries in the top three slots of a “Best Wine Country Hotel” rundown. Just three states are represented on the list: Michigan, with two slots; California, with six; and Oregon, with one.

Topping the poll is Traverse City’s own Chateau Chantal.

“Chateau Chantal, located just north of Traverse City, Michigan, combines a vineyard and winery with luxurious B&B lodging,” USA Today writes. “All suites and rooms have exceptional views of vineyards or Grand Traverse Bay, many with private patios or balconies, and several that offer wet bars and whirlpool tubs. The inn’s amenities include fireplaces and sitting areas, plus an exceptional breakfast.”

Finishing in third, meanwhile, is Black Star Farms in Suttons Bay.

“The Inn at Black Star Farms puts guests in the heart of the Traverse Wine Coast, with easy access to wineries and tasting rooms on the Old Mission and Leelanau wine trails,” touts USA Today. “Each stay includes a daily breakfast, nightly hospitality hour with wine and small bites, a bottle of house wine, and an exclusive barrel room tasting.”

Other winery hotels on the list include the Allegretto Vineyard Resort in Paso Robles, California (at number 2), The Winchester Inn in Ashland, Oregon (at number 6), and a trio of Napa Valley hotels (filling in slots 7, 9, and 10).

USA Today compiles its 10Best lists by convening a panel of experts to submit nominees and then having readers vote on the finalists. This particular list is meant to showcase the best spots in the country to enjoy “a full-fledged wine country getaway,” with each selected spot praised as “a perfect place to relax over a glass of wine after a day of touring and tasting in wine regions around the country.”

It’s not the first time a northern Michigan destination has performed well on a 10Best list. This past March, USA Today readers voted Hop Lot in Suttons Bay as the second-best beer garden in the United States.
