Soon Minus A Board Member, TCAPS Seeks A Replacement

June 27, 2018

As he had indicated earlier this month, Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) board member Jan Geht is moving away from the area next month, so TCAPS is now seeking an interim candidate to fill his vacant seat.

Geht, who was elected to the Board of Education in 2016 for a four-year term, is moving to St. Paul, Minn. to take on a federal government position. Since he will be living outside of the district, Geht will not be able to continue serving on the TCAPS board.

The TCAPS Board plans to find an interim replacement for Geht to serve through the coming November election. At that point, voters will select Geht’s long-term successor, who will finish out the remaining two years of his term. Four additional seats with the board will also be up for grabs in November, all with four-year terms. The current terms for Board President Erik Falconer, Vice President Sue Kelly, Treasurer Scott Hardy, and Trustee Kelly Clark all expire in December of this year.

To fill Geht’s seat, TCAPS is encouraging interested candidates to submit applications by 5pm on July 5. These applications should consist of “a written letter of interest, including a short statement regarding the qualities and experience the candidate brings to the position.” Each letter should include the candidate’s contact details (including name, street address, phone number, and email) and should be sent to:

Doris Ellery, Secretary, TCAPS Board of Education
c/o Stacey Hozak
412 Webster Street
Traverse City, MI 49686
hozakst@tcaps.net

Eligible candidates must be 18 years of age or older. They must also be residents and registered voters in the TCAPS district, residents of the State of Michigan, and legal United States citizens.

Once candidates have submitted their letters of interest, they will be sent several additional questions by TCAPS. Each question requires a written response, which need to be submitted by 5pm on July 6.

Candidates wishing to pursue longer-term TCAPS Board of Education seats are required to file for the election by July 24.
