Spanglish to Open Restaurant

May 6, 2013

The Spanglish Catering Co. has been selling tamales and salsa at the Village at Grand Traverse Commons’ Saturday Market for a year and a half. Now they’re about to become a permanent fixture at the Village.

Anna and Vicente Serrano will open Spanglish later this month, with seating for 12-15 plus outdoor seating. They’re currently renovating space in Building 69 formerly occupied by The Underground Cheesecake Co., which has consolidated into the building behind its old location.

Because the Serranos' kitchen will be small, they’ll focus on a small menu and – above all – freshness and quality.

“Our food is not wet burrito smothered in yellow cheese, it’s how Mexican people really eat: fresh produce, fruit, beans, corn tortillas..." Anna Serrano says. "We’re keeping that traditional, healthy framework, though we love to mix in some American ingredients and cooking techniques.”

In addition to tamales, customers will find tacos (pork, chicken, beef and veggie), salads, tortas, burritos and other fare. Some items will be ready-to-go in the deli case, including dinners, while others will be made on the spot.

They will be open 10-6 Monday-Saturday and will continue to do some catering.
