Squirrel Shuts Down Governmental Center

By Beth Milligan | March 14, 2025

A close encounter between a squirrel and a transformer shut down the Governmental Center Friday.

The incident caused a power outage that prompted the City of Traverse and Grand Traverse County to both send their staff home and close down their joint campus on Boardman Avenue. The Governmental Center, Prosecuting Attorney's Office, and Courts were all closed for the rest of the day Friday. The Governmental Center's red drop box and online payments remained available to residents.

The city noted in a release that the squirrel "survived the incident."
