TCAPS Prepares for Admin Move to Glenn Loomis

By Beth Milligan | March 11, 2024

With a deal pending for a development group to purchase the Ida Tompkins Boardman Administration Building on Webster Street, Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) will begin relocating its administative staff this month to the Glenn Loomis school building on Oak Street. TCAPS school board meetings will also take place at Glenn Loomis starting May 27, the district announced Monday.

Glenn Loomis has been "mostly vacant since TCAPS Montessori moved to its new location on Franke Road at the start of the 2023-2024 school year," according to TCAPS. In addition to serving as the new administrative headquarters, Glenn Loomis is expected to serve as a temporary school in the future for Central Grade School students when that building is reconstructed. While TCAPS board meetings will continue to be live-streamed online at www.TCAPS.net from Glenn Loomis, they will no longer be aired on television on channel 190. Recorded meetings will also be available for viewing on the TCAPS YouTube page.

The TCAPS print department, which the district noted "has grown to encompass an entire floor of the Ida Tompkins Boardman Administration Building," will move operations to the TCAPS Sabin Data Center on Cass Road in June. "This alignment provides ample space for the extensive machinery and allows for equal proximity across the district for deliveries," according to TCAPS. "All other departments, including office of the superintendent, human resources, business office, licensed child care, communications, curriculum and instruction, and special education will relocate to Glenn Loomis this spring. TCAPS will provide the community with regular updates throughout the moving process."

TCAPS is selling the Ida Tompkins Boardman Administration Building due to "aging infrastructure and the cost associated with needing extensive renovations," according to the district. The building is being purchased by Boardman Building, LLC for $750,000. That company intends to preserve the building - a move strongly supported by neighboring residents - and convert it into residential units, with some potential for additional office or other commercial use. Traverse City planning commissioners last week held a public hearing on a rezoning request from Boardman Building, LLC to allow its plans to move forward and approved the application. That request now goes to city commissioners for final approval.

The updated mailing address for TCAPS Administration is P.O. Box 232, Traverse City, MI 49685. The physical address is 1009 South Oak Street. Phone numbers for TCAPS staff will remain the same.
