Trailer Breaks Free, Causes Accident

By Beth Milligan | Oct. 28, 2017

A 59-year-old Traverse City woman was cited after a trailer broke free from her vehicle and struck another car Thursday.

Leelanau County Sheriff's Office and Suttons Bay/Bingham Fire and Rescue personnel responded to the scene of the two-car accident on South Lake Leelanau Drive south of O'Brien Road in Suttons Bay Township at 11:48am. An investigation determined that the Traverse City woman was driving north in a 2002 GMC pulling a utility trailer when she rounded a corner, causing the trailer to break free of her vehicle. The trailer crossed the center line and stuck a southbound 2004 Pontiac driven by a 51-year-old Lake Leelanau woman.

The Pontiac was found off the west side of the roadway extensively damaged with the utility trailer embedded in its side (pictured). No one was injured in the crash. The Traverse City driver was cited for having improper safety chains on her trailer.
