Workshop Planned for Parents on Social Media Safety

By Beth Milligan | July 16, 2024

Several agencies are partnering to host a free workshop for parents on social media and how to stay safe online on Thursday, July 25 at Gilbert Lodge in Long Lake Township.

The Coalition to Combat Human Trafficking, Michigan State Police Computer Crimes Unit, and Grand Traverse and other surrounding counties will be hosting the presentation, which will be given by MSP's Sgt. Travis Kirschner. According to the program description, social media can play a huge role in teens and drug use, exposing them to offers from dealers to buy drugs through various social sites.

"It is never too late for parents to get acquainted with the various social apps...and the slang terms many of them use to communicate while texting and using social media," the description states. "On average, teens spend more than seven hours a day in front of a screen outside of schoolwork. How do you help a child develop skills to make good choices? Ensure they use their online privileges wisely? Avoid inappropriate behavior or inaccurate information?"

The presentation will go from 6pm to 7pm, with refreshments served at 5:30pm. Gilbert Lodge is located at 6800 North Long Lake Road.
