East Bay Township Woman Killed in Crash by Alleged Drunk Driver

By Beth Milligan | Dec. 20, 2023

A 71-year-old East Bay Township woman was killed - and a 67-year-old East Bay Township man hospitalized - in an accident Tuesday believed to be the fault of a 34-year-old driver, who was allegedly driving drunk and has been arrested.

According to the Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office, authorities were dispatched to a two-vehicle crash at 8:08pm Tuesday at High Lake Road and Willsey Road in East Bay Township. A 34-year-old East Bay Township man in a pick-up truck failed to yield to a southbound sedan containing the 71-year-old woman and 67-year-old man. The truck driver attempted to make a left turn from High Lake onto Willsey Road when the collision occurred.

Both occupants of the sedan were taken to Munson Medical Center, where the female passenger was later pronounced dead. The 34-year-old driver, who was determined to be at fault in the accident, was found to be under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested on charges of OWI III causing death.

The names of those involved have not yet been released. The Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Michigan State Police, Metro Fire, East Bay Ambulance, and MMR at the accident scene. The case is still under investigation, according to the Sheriff's Office.
