Airport Police Investigation Leads to Arrest, Recovery of Stolen Property

Oct. 29, 2026

A months-long investigation into multiple luggage thefts reported at Cherry Capital Airport led to an arrest and the recovery of more than $10,000 in stolen property.

The airport's police department began investigating in August after several travelers reported that checked luggage had been taken from the baggage claim area before it could be retrieved.

Officers reviewed airport security footage and coordinated follow-up efforts that led to the identification of a suspect: Renee Elias, 59, of Gaylord. Working in partnership with the Traverse City Police Department and Michigan State Police, airport police officers executed a search warrant, recovered stolen items, and made an arrest on October 28.

Elias was arraigned on a two-count felony warrant for larceny in a building.
